Trailer Analysis (Jordan)
The Film Title: You’re Next
Year of Release: August 23rd 2013
Director: Adam Wingard
Production/Financing Company: HanWay Entertainment and Lionsgate
Principle Cast: Sharni Vinson, Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn, A. J. Bowen, Joe Swanberg, Margaret Laney, Amy Seimetz, Ti West, Barbara Crampton, Rob Moran.
Films Origin/Info: Adaptation: On the you’re next trailer there was an adaptation about the film as an article written by Adam Bellotto made a review saying that the film you’re next are using new posters to threaten film writers with murder. Sources say that Shock till you drop where messaged with images alongside threatening messages like ‘you've been chosen’. Also there was another article written by Rob Hunter who believed the Slasher film was big laughs, bloody kills and expected genre stupidity, Rob hunter had a balanced argument to say as he stated the upside ‘‘very funny, one of the best ‘final girls’ in years; score is strong and energetic’’ the downside ‘’ Every single character aside from Erin is a typical horror film idiot; opening double-homicide scene is incredibly weak’’.
Sequel: Due to the way that you’re next ended with the theory of the ‘final girl’, there won’t be a you’re next 2, if there was it wouldn't make sense as theory of the ‘final girl’ is meant to be that the girl kills the killers and walks away a live, so no there shouldn't be another sequel. However a article online showed an interview with the director Adam Wingard and he stated ‘’ We did V/H/S/2 so yeah, we’re not necessarily opposed to doing sequels; we’re just opposed to making sequels without anything new to say. That’s when you’re making a sequel for the wrong reasons. I think i will probably do a non-genre movie next before we’d come back for another you’re next, if we do at all. The tricky things with sequels is to no bee to self-indulgent as storytellers; sometimes it can be dangerous thing if you’re left to your own devices or if you try and pander to your audience.
Franchise: From the movie’s success sources have said that you’re next could be the next big film franchise in terms of horror films the source also stated that due to this summer releasing a lot of horror films, you’re next has huge competitors such as The Conjurer, and Insidious 2.
Re-Make: You’re next was a remake of the you’re next in 2011, it was written and directed by the same people but was re-made as the film was so successful.
Synopsis: A family reunion turns into a full-on massacre when a gang of masked killers invade a sprawling country mansion on a ruthless mission of murder. Paul (Rob Moran) and Aubrey Davison (Barbara Crampton) are about to celebrate their wedding anniversary, and they've invited their grown-up children out to the country to share in the revelry. The first to arrive are Crispian (A.J. Bowen) and his new girlfriend Erin (Sharni Vinson). It isn't long before the rest of the family has filed in as well, and the party gets under way. Later, at the dinner table, old sibling rivalries begin to resurface and parental preferences quickly become apparent. Just as tensions begin to flare up, however, a crossbow arrow blasts through the glass window and panic sets in. The family is under attack. But who are the savage invaders donning eerie farm-animal masks, and what is their motive behind slaughtering everyone in the house? No one is safe as the blood starts to flow, but Erin is determined to see the dawn, and she's got the survival skills to strike back at her attackers with deadly force.
Mise En Scene: Lighting: The lighting used on the trailer helps with the representation of the horror aspect within the trailer. The dark lighting shadows the killers with a lot of shots ranging from close shots to long shots, showing them as having ‘the darkness as their ally’ which creates more fear for viewers as it is common stereotype used in horror films that creates fear for viewers.
Non Verbal Communication: The main time in the trailer you see Non Verbal Communication is round 48 seconds where it uses a quick cut to show everyone’s reaction and facial expression to the man getting a bow an arrow shot in his head through the window, the use of showing everyone’s Non Verbal Communication shows how everyone is feeling during that moment. Another use of a quick cut to show the woman’s face to her seeing the writing ‘you’re next’ written on the mirror with blood, it also shows another woman’s facial reaction around 1:25 on the trailer, she looks scared as she has just seen a man in a rabbit mask with a hammer in its hand the fact that the trailer has only shown mainly a woman’s facial reaction could support the theorist Laura Mulvey as she believes Male’s are seen as dominant and powerful and woman are seen as ‘Drama Queens’ who are defenseless and emotional. Seconds later this is later on contradicted as the same woman is shown picking up a knife slowly showing her facial expressions as pure bravery this shows that the trailer has used two theorist as the trailer implies that she is the ‘final girl’ which comes from the theorist clover.
Setting: The trailer is set in a vacation mansion in the country; it is a vacation where the family is going to celebrate the parent’s marriage.
Costumes: Every character is dressed as smart casual, if you look from 22 seconds in the trailer, you can see their sitting around for dinner hence why there wearing smart casual. With the killers costumes, each killer has a different mask, Lamb tiger and fox, the killers wear black hoodies which could represents that darkness is there ally and it could to show that there harder to see in the dark as the time there always strike is at night time.
Props: The main props that were used were weapons, the killers who where men all had their own special weapon there were good at, this to supports the theorist Laura mulvey that male’s are dominant and powerful later on again when the woman picks up a knife to use to fight back shows that Laura mulvey is challenged by clover’s theory as she becomes the ‘final girl’.
Sound: Digetic sound is mainly used throughout the trailer, it starts with a happy soundtrack as the trailer starts off with someone playing the disk, This soundtrack starts to slow down and then that’s when the use of sound effects come in, the first sound effect you hear is the borrow and arrow shattering the window glass and going in to the man’s forehead, you then hear another sound effect as one of the killer’s shoot another borrow and arrow at the picture frame which breaks it. Later on you then hear more digetic sound with the use of the family moving furniture to cover doors, windows being shut, etc. Non Digetic sound is also changed when the bow and arrow is fired as it changes from a happy/joyful song to a first tempo song representing what has just happened and there also done this to match the tempo of the song with the quick cuts used. Non digetic sound is used with the use of dialogue as the actors would use dialogue as soon as the music changed to match their mood.
Camera Angles & Movement: There is a lot of close up, and mid shots done to show the facial expressions of the characters faces, there is use of a tracking movement when the characters find out there being attacked and there get on their knees and crawl, this is known as a backwards track as the characters are moving towards the camera. Additionally there is use of a establishing shot when it shows the house as a whole and then a second later showing all the lights going off. Furthermore there is use of a long shot where it shows one of the killers aiming with the cross bow arrow, There is also to use of a high angle shot where the woman is on the floor and then it shows a low angle shot from her Point of view showing the killer with the hammer in his hand this shows the two theories ‘Male dominant’ and ‘Final girl’ being shown in the trailer. There also show a mid shot of the mirror on the wall with ‘you’re next’ written on it with blood this is then followed by a reaction shot by a woman to show her reaction to what she’s seen on the wall.
Genre: You’re next has three genre’s Thriller, Comedy and Slasher, the trailer is very unique to showing its own way to how Slasher genre fits in the film with the use of blood written on the wall saying ‘you’re next’ implies that it is a Slasher as you do see blood being featured, Comedy is not really shown in the trailer as everything is to been seen as scary and serious.
Narrative: There is no use of narration for the you’re next trailer only dialogue between the actors which is featured in the film.
Voice Over: Due to there being no use of narration, there was no style of it. But from the dialogue heard it tends to be very professional and acted well out.
Theme: I believe the theme for your next is fun, fun for the killers, I believe there have represented the killers to do this as maybe there have a passion for killing people.
Pacing: The trailer starts off slow and calm with the use of happy/joyful music to go with, from the beginning to 0:40, the music then changes to a fast tempo song and pacing begins to come quicker as quick cuts are starting to happen more often. The impact pacing has is it makes viewers understand that when something scary might occur.
On Screen Graphics/Captions: Information revealed on YouTube under the trailer is basic things such as the director (Adam Wingard) the people who are starring in it. It also features a little synopsis about the film, during the trailer no information is revealed until half way through where only a little bit is revealed when it shows cuts of one word sentences e.g. perfect weekend. The font of captions is Calibri and the text is about 14 not to small not to big in order for viewers to read, the colour used is black in order for viewers to see the writing clearly.
Editing & Post Production: Due to it being a trailer the only form of editing is used is mainly fast cuts this is used to match the tempo of the music being played, the editing drives the tempo of the music, this creates a lot of tension and can scare the audience and keep them entertained as cuts are going quicker and it’s not long takes making the audience bored.
Additional Information: The mixture in the music for the trailer as a whole is very effective. There is a mix of true horror music to build suspense of the killers getting closer. However they then flip the same stereotype around and use calm, ‘commercial’ music, you wouldn't expect from a horror trailer. This is done to add the sinister mood of the trailer as the happy music symbolizes that the killers in the trailer are having fun in killing innocent people which adds to the ‘psychotic nature’ of the trailer. There is also a very sudden change in the atmosphere which helps add to the shocking aspect of the film. As the start makes the film seem like a calm film about friends meeting up and having fun. Then the mood changes in a second and it is immediately recognizable that it is a horror. This sudden change in mood surprises viewers they are lead down the path of believing the film will be a calm film, yet the sudden change completely changes viewer’s perception of the whole film in general. Furthermore the sudden jump in mood relates to a ‘jump scare’ commonly used in horror films.
The use of text in this trailer is very effective. By using the short sentences at the end of the trailer the viewers are connected to the story with the people involved in the trailer. ‘’The animals will hunt you.’’ By using the ‘’You’’ the viewers are automatically connected to the story and start feeling the fear of that the characters in the film fear as it is made out to seem like they are bearing hunted too.
Conclusion: Overall I think this was a good trailer and it was very good at representing a horror film as it takes a lot of conventions to do so, with the use of suspense and involving the audience which was done very well. Furthermore it uses opposites of typical conventions such as unexpected music not directly linking with what’s going on, on screen. This makes it stand out and makes it look different to your average horror film.

Trailer Analysis (Diana)
The film title: Insidious
Year of release: 2011
Director: James Wan
Genre/sub-genre: Supernatural/ Horror
Production/financing Company: Film district, stage 6 films and Alliance films.
Principle Cast: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty simpkins.
Films origin/Info: Adaptation? Sequel? Franchise? Re-make? ‘Insidious’ means harmful and destructive. Insidious 2 is coming out in September 2013.
Synopsis: A family are in search of help for their son Dalton, who fell into a coma after a mysterious incident in the attic. Little do they know that there is much more to this endless sleep than meets the eye as they explore the paranormal, and rediscover the past, the key to getting their son back once and for all.
Genre: The sub-genre of Insidious is Supernatural/horror, you can verify this as seen in the trailer there are shots of a boy in a coma and a young girl with long dark hair and pale skin that looks evil. In supernatural horrors such as ‘paranormal activity’ and ‘the grudge’ you tend to find that young children are used in the film or are the main characters or instigate what happens throughout the film.
Theme: Fear is expressed in the following trailer, through the characters facial expressions and a quote from one of the character’s in the film who says “I wanna leave, I wanna leave this house” in female voice who sounds terrified and anxious.
Location: In the teaser trailer the shots reveal one particular location of the rooms in the house of the family who are being haunted, which gives the impression that the film is shot purely in the family house.
Narrative: In the following trailer the narrative is in linear order, and it gives you a rough idea of the storyline, but at the same time doesn’t give away too much .So as a viewer if you want to find out why whatever is happening is happening, you must watch the full film.
Characters: The characters featured in the trailer are the Mother (Rose Byrne) who is portrayed as a disheartened mother whose son is in a coma and also fearful of the danger lurking in her family home. The young boy in a coma (Ty Simpkins) is represented as an innocent child who is unfortunately haunted. The Father (Patrick Wilson) is also portrayed to be quite fearful of what is happening. The old lady (Elise Reinier) also plays her part of informing the family of what is wrong with their child.
Voice over: There is more dialogue from the characters from within the film then a voice over narrating the film. But there is a voice over of a female voice saying “I wanna leave I wanna leave this house” in a distressed voice.
Pacing: The pacing in the trailer is not consistent, however there is a some sort of pattern of ‘slow fast slow fast’ it starts of slow at the beginning, then picks up a fast pace then slows down in the middle again and there is a snippet of dialogue then switches to a fast pace and ends on a fast pace.
On-screen graphics/captions: The captions used at the beginning of the trailer are white and of a sans serif and written in capital letters. ‘FROM THE MAKERS of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY AND SAW’ The words, makers, saw and paranormal activity are highlighted in bold. This emphasises the fact that the makers of these two successful horror films have contributed to this film, and so for the audience that watched Saw and Paranormal activity and enjoyed it, will also be pleased with the outcome of Insidious. ‘INSIDIOUS’ is the last caption used at the end of the trailer which is placed right in the middle of the screen.
Editing& post production: Continuity editing is used in the trailer effectively all the way through. Quick cuts of various scenes in the film are used, which teases the audience, and builds up tension. Cross cutting techniques are also used in the trailer. Transitions of fading in and out are used quite frequently in the trailer, especially when the narrative starts to build up.
Music &other sound effects: There is non digetic haunting tones playing throughout the trailer, which creates a freaky, terrifying atmosphere and to create tension in the trailer. Foley sound effects of unusual screaming, ticking and slashing noises are also heard within the trailer, which matches the supernatural genre.
Camerawork: A high angle shot of the mum is used when she is looking up and listening to these odd noises coming from the baby monitor that particular shot was effective as it showed her body language and expression as to what she was hearing. There are also a mix of close ups shots of the characters and an extreme close up of the dad’s eyes. Towards the end of the trailer there is a bird’s eye view angle which gives us a clear view of the characters gathered round the table..
